Introduction to Post-Conviction DNA Testing

This session will provide an introduction to the science underlying DNA testing, including how DNA is inherited, and how it may be helpful to proving someone's innocence. We will continue with a look at the different methods of DNA testing currently available to the scientific community and their relative advantages and disadvantages, as well as how inclusion statistics are calculated. The session will conclude with evaluation and litigation strategies for using DNA testing in post-conviction innocence cases, including identification strategies of probative biological evidence, how to craft DNA theories of exoneration, the basics of litigating DNA cases, and the basic structure of the DNA testing statutes.
