Beverly Monroe

Beverly Monroe was the victim of policy tunnel vision when she was wrongfully convicted of murdering her longtime boyfriend in 1992 in Virginia. Despite defense evidence showing the death to be a suicide, she was found guilty of first-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony and sentenced to 22 years. In April 2002, a U.S. District Court judge granted Monroe’s habeas corpus petition and overturned her conviction. In June 2003, after the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the decision, prosecutors announced that they would not retry the case. Beverly is an advocate for studying the causes of injustices and effecting change and reform.
